DEBORAH DAVIS


DEBORAH DAVIS is a gifted singer and consummate performer with a warm angelic yet sultry voice that has captivated and seduced audiences throughout the world. Poet, lyricist, actress, artist, dancer, teacher, and athlete, the basics of her multi faceted character hasn’t altered much since she was chosen most versatile class favorite in high school. But it is her singing that makes one really take notice. Be it jazz, classical, gospel, pop, country, R&B, hip-hop or commercial jingles, you name it, she has been asked to sing it at one time or another, and has accepted each challenge developing a personal motto, “If there’s gigs to be, I’m gigging ‘em. She can do it all and make it look easy, but her chosen repertoire consist of a wide selection of familiar, and obscure jazz standards that outline her life's experiences, including love ballads, blues, latin, and whimsical swing tunes. Constantly working on the New York, European & Asian jazz scenes has given Deborah Davis a sophisticated poise that is tempered with sensitivity and grace. Her natural flowing charm, obvious talents, charisma, and flawless stage presence draw you into her show. Amongst her colleagues, she’s developed a reputation as a hard swinging, hip tempo setting singer as she plays around with rhythmic & melodic improvisations. Amongst critics she’s also know for seducing her audiences with a ballad. Deborah sings with a pure honesty that will strike emotions deep within the core of your being.
A native of Dallas, Texas, Deborah grew up in a time where she was surrounded by little Debbie's. Striving for her own independence she dropped the last three letters of her name and has since been affectionately know as Debo to family and friends. Although not from a musical family, Deborah has been singing practically as long as she's been talking. Growing up without a stereo in the house she listened most often to the music of her own soul. She felt like singing, so she sang, and sang, and sang. Before long it became more than what she did. Singing became who she was. With no one to emulate and a no real musical influences, Deborah developed her own style of singing, and created her own opportunities to sing. She’d sing in church, local gospel ensembles, school talent shows, beauty contest, commercial jingles and, party bands. Her first inspirations towards a jazz career were when her high school choir director and mentor, ROBERT SANDERS added her to his weekend jazz gigs. From that time on there was never a question as to what her vocation would be. Her only task was to gain formal training. Armed with pure determination and raw talent, Deborah earned a BACHELOR OF MUSIC EDUCATION DEGREE in vocal studies from NORTH TEXAS UNIVERSITY and subsequently an ASSOCIATE ARTS DEGREE in RECORDING ENGINEERING at CEDAR VALLEY COLLEGE. In addition, she studied acting and dance at EL CENTRO COLLEGE. Singing her way through college Deborah was already a permanent fixture on the Dallas jazz scene when she finished school. She had gained invaluable experience leading her own jazz bands, and opening for artist like BOBBI HUMPHREY, DEBRA LAWS and ANGELA BOFILL. Deborah also showcased her singing, acting, and dancing talents in local theater productions of THE WIZ, PORGY AND BESS, DON'T BOTHER ME, I CAN'T COPE, and her leadership skills as production manager in ZOOMAN AND THE SIGN.
Her musical development brought her to New York City in 1986, where she has settled in, and carved out a niche for herself on the jazz scene, as well as managed to continued theater work with performances in BEEHIVE (Japan tour), ONE MO TIME (NYC) and SH-BOOM (NYC). Deborah's distinct style of phrasing, extraordinary singing ability and professionalism has earned her invitations to perform with legendary jazz greats RAY BROWN, LIONEL HAMPTON and CLARK TERRY, as well as an rare opportunity to substitute for ABBEY LINCOLN. In addition, FREDDIE HUBBARD, ART BLAKEY, LOU DONALDSON and HAROLD MABERN have all shared their stage with Deborah occasionally inviting her to jam. She’s lead bands featuring many of New York’s young lions of jazz such a DELFEAYO MARSALIS, JAMES WILLIAMS, BENNY GREEN, CYRUS CHESTNUT, MARC CARY, CHRISTIAN MC BRIDE, PETER WASHINGTON, RON AFFIF, RUSSELL MALONE, JEFF WATS, GREG HUTCHINSON, BRIAN BLADE, and too many others to name. Her performances have generated rave reviews from the NEW YORK TIMES, NEW YORK NEWSDAY, and the AMSTERDAM NEWS. She has sung on the stages of very well established jazz clubs, concert halls and festivals including THE BLUE NOTE, BIRDLAND, VILLAGE VANGUARD, SWEET BASIL, THE FIVE SPOT, TAVERN ON THE GREEN, THE RAINBOW ROOM, WINDOWS OF THE WORLD, MT.FUJI JAZZ FEST., and for dignitaries at the UNITED NATIONS & U.S. EMBASSY affairs including a performance for PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON. The world is her playground as she continues to gain international recognition during extensive tours annually of Europe, and Asia. She has performed with THE SHIRELLS Singapore Tour, STEVEN SCOTT ORCHESTRAS, HANK LANE ORCHESTRAS, THE SUPPER CLUB ORCHESTRA, and presently BUD MALTIN MUSIC. In addition, Deborah has formed her own company MANHATTAN MUSIC DESIGN booking, contracting and performing for many of New York’s Elite Social Functions & Corporate Events. Deborah Davis is also an indie recording artist with her own label GOT MY OWN RECORDS. Striving to be a well rounded person, Deborah proudly adds to her list of life accomplishment a 26.2 mile fundraising marathon for the LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY (which she completed), and ongoing annual benefit concerts at New York’s Blue Note Jazz Club, to raise funds for that cause.

Carol Duboc


GOLD NOTE MUSIC has announced the latest release from CAROL DUBOC - hailed as "one of the most interesting and dynamic jazz singers of her generation" by Jazz Times Magazine . The platinum-selling vocalist, songwriter and arranger introduces Songs for Lovers, a sexy and soulful collection of eight new compositions, which also includes romantic renditions of Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" and "Feel Like Making Love." The disc's first single, "My Valentine," leaped to prominence upon its release at #13 on the Radio & Records" Smooth Jazz Indicator" chart and debuted at #7 on the Smoothjazz.com "Most Added" chart. Christopher Loudon of the Jazz Times Magazine writes "[Carol Duboc's] ‘Feel Like Making Love' captures the same sense of languid satisfaction that made the Roberta Flack original so engaging."
As a writer and arranger, Duboc has sold over three million records and has worked with Patti Labelle, Tom Jones and Jeff Lorber, among many others. Songs for Lovers is Duboc's fourth release following her three critically acclaimed albums beginning in 2002, and her big screen debut as "Pumpkin" in Be Cool in 2005, which starred John Travolta, Uma Thurman and Danny DeVito. Duboc's music can be heard on radio stations around the world.
Carol Duboc first stepped out as a solo artist with her debut album With All That I Am in 2001. She immediately began earning critical acclaim as one of the top new jazz singers on the music scene. Sandy Shore of smoothjazz.com announced "Smooth Jazz has a new poster girl!" And Don Heckman (Los Angeles Times) writes, "Duboc's singing has the strength and originality to quickly move her into the top level of jazz vocalists - regardless of genre."
Her inspirational short CD, I Stand for America, earned Carol national recognition. In a moving tribute to the heroes and the fallen at Ground Zero, CNN's "Larry King Live" chose Carol's inspirational song "I Stand for America" as the musical backdrop for a video album of photos now burned into our minds. Following her auspicious debut, Carol's second full release was simply titled Duboc in 2003. Carol's 2005 release, entitled All Of You, is another extension of her tremendous talent. She was also featured on NBC and SmoothJazz TV. Christopher Loudon of Jazz Times Magazine writes that Carol "has cleverly shaped an evocative excavation of love in all its forms."
Originally from Kansas City, Missouri, Carol moved to Los Angeles to attend USC's school of music where she majored in vocal performance and music composition and minored in music engineering. While at USC, Carol's soulful vocal style and songwriting talents attracted the attention of R&B producer Teddy Riley. She quickly began working with some of the best producers, writers and musicians in the business, including Jeff Lorber, Gerald Albright, Hubert Laws, George Duke, Maurice White, Patrick Moten, Joe Sample and the Fine Young Cannibals.
Her writing and arranging success has included, among other things, the song "This Word is All" on Patti LaBelle's Gems CD, which went Gold, as well as the title cut, "Precious", on Chante Moore's Gold CD. Carol also penned the hit single "Never Do You Wrong" for Stephanie Mills, and the song "That Boy" on Jade's Jade To The Max CD, which attained Platinum status.
Carol is also the founder of the popular website Wineandmusic.com, the #3 radio station in the genre on Live365.com, which specializes pairing fine wine with great music.

Jimmy Cobb


Jimmy Cobb (born January 20, 1929 in Washington D.C.) is an American jazz drummer. He has worked extensively with a wide range of artists, including Dinah Washington, Pearl Bailey, Clark Terry, Cannonball Adderley, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Wynton Kelly, Stan Getz, Wes Montgomery, Gil Evans, Miles Davis, Paul Chambers, Kenny Burrell, J. J. Johnson, Sonny Stitt, Nat Adderley, Hank Jones, Ron Carter, George Coleman, Fathead Newman, Geri Allen, Earl Bostic, Leo Parker, Charlie Rouse, Ernie Royal, Philly Joe Jones, Walter Booker, Jerome Richardson, Keter Betts, Jimmy Cleveland, Sam Jones, Red Garland, Joe Henderson, Eddie Gomez, Cannonball Adderley, Nat Adderley, Bill Evans, Stefan Karlsson, Jeremy Steig, Richard Wyands, Peter Bernstein, Richie Cole, Nancy Wilson, Dinah Washington, Ricky Ford, David Amram, and many more.
His most famous work is on Miles Davis' Kind of Blue (1959), considered by many to be the quintessential jazz record. Cobb is the last surviving player from the session. He also played on other famous Davis albums, including Sketches of Spain, Someday My Prince Will Come, Live at Carnegie Hall, Live at the Blackhawk, and briefly on Porgy and Bess and Sorcerer.
2008 Awards In June 2008, Jimmy was the recipient of the Don Redman Heritage award. On October 17 2008, Jimmy was one of 6 to be presented with the 2009 National Endowment for the Arts, NEA Jazz Masters, award.

Legendary jazz drummer, Jimmy Cobb, was born in Washington, D.C. on January 20, 1929. A superb, mostly self-taught musician, Jimmy is the elder statesman of all the incredible Miles Davis bands. Jimmy's inspirational work with Miles, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly and Co. spanned 1957 until 1963, and included the masterpiece "Kind of Blue", the most popular jazz recording in history. He also played on "Sketches of Spain", Someday My Prince will Come", "Live at Carnegie Hall, "Live at the Blackhawk", "Porgy and Bess", and many, many other watershed Miles Davis recordings. Sophie Dunér


Sophie Dunér is a singer/composer from Sweden with a past in the United States and Spain. Active as a jazz, world and modern classical singer, she has recorded and toured extensively throughout the world having collaborated with musicians such as Paul Clarvis, Martin France, Aaron Goldberg, Sten Höstfält, Agustín Gerenu, David Boato, Fernando Tarrés, Guillermo Klein ,Laura Andel and Manuel Ceide. In 2005 she recorded her latest album "The Rain in Spain" with C.I.M.P records in NY, USA featuring musicians Rory Stuart, Matt Pennman & Kahlil Kwame Bell, an album that got extensieve reviews in Cadence Magazine.

Extended biography


Sophie Dunér began her carreer in the United States .Technically versatile, her tastes in music are wide ranging. While studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston, jazz improvisation teacher Hal Crook used to tell her " You sing the heck out of the hornplayers " . Here she studied voice, improvisation and composition. Sophie is like a chameleon, adapting very easy to any kind of music with great sensibility. Her familiarity with jazz, ethnic and 20th century classical music has led many composers and musicians to ask her to join them in musical collabo-ration during rescent years. Leading The Sophie Dunér Orchestra in Boston in the beginning of the 90s, she composed & performed in the USA at clubs such as the Willow Jazz Club, Sculler´s, Birdland, Cornelia Street Café etc They travelled to the Snowfestival of Sapporo Japan - a tour sponsored by Berklee College of Music to be followed by the CD "Orange", her debut album as well as The Stockholm Jazz Festival & The Baltic Jazz Festival in Scandinavia. The band has included musicians suchas Mika Pohjola ,George Dontchev, Kazumi Ikenaga, Bruno Råberg, David Boato and Roberto Dani. She collaborated with composers such as Sunnyside recording artist Guillermo Klein of The Big Van recording as a guest singer on his big band CD "The Big Van" as well as performing in the Boston & NYC area featuring musicians such as Chris Cheek, Seamus Blake and Sten Hostfalt. She was also featured on his CD " El Minotauro ". In 1996 she was invited on "The Outsider" CD (Savant ) with Fernando Tarrés & Arida Conta Group featuring Danilo Pérez, Dan. Rieser, Don Mc Caslin and Fernando Huergo on Savant Records, N.Y. Also featured on his album " Prausagios da Carnaval" on BAU Records, Argentina. Herb Pomeroy of Boston and Phil Wilson had her featured in their big bands. David Doms of "Universal You" brought her to perform at CBGB´s in NYC & featuring her on his album Garden of Delight for Gruvetune Records, Boston. Playwright Thamare Thorne invited her to collaborate with a classical ensemble performing for the play "Seven last words" at The Theater for the New City in NYC. Pianist Aaron Goldberg had her sing with his trio at Kings Theater in Boston featuring Mark Turner & Reuben Rogers. 20th century Spanish composer Manuel Ceide used Sophie as a mezzo soprano in his pieces with The Composers of the New England Collectives performing in Boston. Tours in Spain with the same ensemble, performing at Cultural Centers and on TV in Madrid and Galicia. Her collaboration with Manuel would continue and she went on to perform in Holland at the Fenteneer Van Vissingen Zaal and Gerte Kerk with musicians such as Henk Alkema etc. Off to Puerto Rico in 1998, she gave performances & workshops at the Univ. of P.R with the music of M. Ceide & Francis Schwartz. She´d also perform the music of Argentine electronic composer Eduardo Kusnir. The same team went to Galicia in Spain performing at Fundación Eugenio Granell in Santiago, Centro Galega de Información and at Caja Madrid in Lugo. In Switzerland she collaborated with saxofonist/composer Juerg Wickihalder. She recorded as co composer & singer on the CD "Dance with me" with the big band Interplay Collective, Dreamscape Music performing at clubs & festivals ( Glarus Jazz Festival ) in Switzerland and Germany. In 2002 and 2003 she returned to Zürich appearing at the " Festival Aum Braunwald" as co composer & singer in the Octet of J. Wickihalder. She also sang with pianist Chris Wiesendanger at Moods Jazz Club. Argentine NYC based composer Laura Andel & Oli Bott invited Sophie to perform with her big band at the Kalkscheune Jazz Club in Berlin broadcasted by Radio Berlin in 2000. The same year, she was selected for the auditions for the Orchestre National de Jazz in Paris as only foreign vocalist. In 1997 Sophie recieved € 4000 from the Society of Arts in Sweden. Moving to Spain in 1996, Sophie performed with her band at Jazz en la Costa, Homenaje a Garcia Lorca , Getxo Jazz Festival, V1 Festival de Jazz de Lugo, Circulo de Bellas Artes (sponsored by SAS & Swedish Embassy of Madrid ) Aula Cultural Plaza Catalunya, Centro Cultural de Garcia Lorca, Café Central etc. . She collaborated with Joaquin Chacón, Dan Rochlis, Agustín Gerenu Victor Merlo, Tony Heimer and Polo Ortí . She recorded with the Spanish/Arabic fusion group Dobra Group on Phorminx Records and on the album Reggaewomen featuring Rita Marley on Arcade Records. She did extensive work for TV channels such as Canal Plus, Canal Digital and TVE such as singing the main theme for the documentary " Días de Vino " and at the anniversary for " Lo más plus " ( Canal Plús ). She taught voice during several years at a Escuela Música Creativa. Maintaining her contact with her native Sweden, she has given concerts at the Gothenburg Symphony Hall in Gothenburg two summers in a row, inviting Peter Nylander, Patrick Andrén, Arne Tengstrand, Filip Agustsson, Torbjörn Zetterberg and Jon Persson. She followed up the TV programme "Goodmorning TV 4" and several radio programmes and newspaper interviews. In September 2005 she recorded her new album of her own theatre inspired jazz tunes with the jazz label C.I.M.P. in NY, USA with Rody Stuart, Matt Penmann & Kahlil Kwame Bell . A project combined with a concert at the Kavehaz Jazz Gallery in NYC. After having spent years in the States and Spain, Sophie returned to her native Sweden. During the last years, she has as well explored the English jazz scene, performing at venues such as Pizza Express and Pizza on the Park in London with musicians such as Gilad Atzmon, Asaf Sirkis, John Turville, Tom Mason, Martin France, Paul Clarvis, Phil Pesket, Sam Burgess and Alisdair Cherry. In Sweden, she has been active performing in Morning News TV4 Gothenburg,two performances of the national anthem at the finals of a game of one of Swedens most successful hockeyteams at the Scandinavium Arena in Gothenburg, a four day concert series & art exhibition at Galleri Gummeson in Stockholm, Stockholm New Music Festival with The Great Learning Orchestra in 2008 etc. In August of 2004, Sophie spent one week studying vocal interpretation at the Stockhausen Music Course in Kuerten, Germany under suggestion of composer Karl Heinz Stockhausen. In 2005, she returned to the course supported by a grant of € 3000 from The Arts Foundation in Sweden.

The list of celebrities who have attended CiCi’s captivating performances includes luminaries such as the late jazz legend Sarah Vaughan and prototypical rocker Mick Jagger.This sultry and soulful singer has performed at the finest venues in Barbados where she’d been enchanting audiences for over 20 years. She has recently won a Cornerstone Award at the Barbados Music Awards, and had previously earned a Music Service Award from the Barbados Tourism Authority in 2004 for her contribution to music on the island.Prior to her recent move to Canada, she performed regularly at the prestigious Sandy Lane Resort with her own jazz band, and she had joined the venerable VSOP Dixieland Jazz Band for a weekly headliner at the Waterfront Café in what had become for many years an island institution for locals and repeat tourists alike.CiCi has also garnered international attention during performances in St. Vincent, St. Lucia, Mustique, Great Britain, and the USA.Serious jazz aficionados will recognize the names of jazz greats CiCi has accompanied, including notables such as the late Ernie Small, Ebe Gilkes, Mike Sealy, Vere Gibson, Nicholas Brancker, Cecil Bascombe and Andre Woodvine.

Akira Jimbo (drums)


Akira Jimbo, también llamado Akira Jinbo (神保 彰, Jinbo Akira?, nacido el 27 de febrero, 1959 en Tokio, Japón) es un japonés freelancer jazz fusion baterista que es famoso por su independencia musical con la batería y por la fusión con baterías electrónicas y acústicas. Dejando a un lado su trabajo en solitario él es además el baterista en la banda Japonesa de jazz fusión Casiopea y también ha participado en varios proyectos con otros músicos como Keiko Matsui, Shambara, y el bajista Brian Bromberg.Es un músico con una notable habilidad técnica y energía, Akira Jimbo se ha convertido en los últimos años en el primer batería japonés que logra una gran fama mundial en los circuitos de clinics. Su asombrosa capacidad ambidiestra y dominio tanto de los sonidos acústicos como electrónicos proporciona siempre unas espectaculares demos.
Akira se hace famoso con el grupo japonés de jazz-fusion Casiopea. Casiopea se formó en 1979 por el guitarrista Issei Noro, el teclista Minoru Mukaiya, el bajista Tetsuo Sakurai y el baterista Takashi Sasaki. El grupo sacó su primer disco en mayo de 1979, una mezcla de jazz y funk con gran energía potenciada por la sección de metales de las estrellas americanas Michael y Randy Brecker y David Sanborn. Akira se incorporó al grupo en 1980, coincidiendo con la aparición el tercer disco, el primero de varios en directo. Akira continuó en el grupo hasta el fin de la década, tiempo durante el cual realizaron tres giras mundiales, apareciendo en Europa por primera vez en 1983.
Los logros de Akira han sido notables desde que empezó a tocar la batería a los 17 años, inspirada por Steve Gadd. Estudió en la Keio University de Tokio y tocó la batería en grandes grupos. Con Casiopea pudo desarrollar ambos talentos, como batería y compositor, en más de una docena de discos. En 1989, Akira y su compañero y brillante bajista Tetsuo Sakurai, abandonan la formación durante varios años. En el año 1996 Akira regresa a Casiopea, trabajando a tiempo parcial, grabando más discos y contribuyendo de nuevo en alguna de las composiciones.
Al dejar Casiopea en 1989, Akira formó el grupo Jimsaku, tocando con Keiko Matsui, Shambara y muchos otros. Woody Allen - New Orleans Jazz Band


Woody Allen y la New Orleans Jazz Band protagonizaron el día 29 de Diciembre de 2009, en el teatro Calderón de Valladolid, el primero de los conciertos que ofrecerán en la gira programada por España y en la que visitarán ciudades como Granada, Murcia, Palma de Mallorca y Pamplona, entre otras.
Hasta el teatro Calderón, lleno para disfrutar de la música de la banda en la que Allen, quien previamente recibió la Espiga de Honor de la Semana Internacional de Cine de Valladolid (Seminci) toca el clarinete, se acercaron distintas personas del mundo de la política, la cultura y la economía de Valladolid empezando por la Corporación Municipal, encabezada por el alcalde de la ciudad, Javier León de la Riva.


En el escenario y acompañados por una tenue luz, la banda comenzó el concierto minutos después de las 20.30 horas con sus tradicionales sonidos de jazz a los que, según señaló Allen en una intervención ante el público tras la segunda canción, se sumarían temas de estilos vinculados a desfiles o piezas populares con el fin de que el público disfrutara, para lo que lo harían "lo mejor posible".
Interrumpidos en varias ocasiones por los aplausos del público, que se entregó a la interpretación, la banda ofreció una hora y media de concierto en la que los músicos pusieron de manifiesto su complicidad y una casi improvisada manera de interpretar la música y en el que el cineasta de Nueva York, ubicado en primera fila, hizo gala de su tradicional movimiento de pierna durante la interpretación.
Dirigida por Eddy Davis, Woody Allen and his New Orleans Jazz Band nació en 1970 y, "aclamada por la crítica", toca los lunes por la noche en el conocido hotel Carlyle de Nueva York y, hasta hace poco, en el pub Michaels y su última visita a Castilla y León tuvo lugar en 2003 en Salamanca.

Miriam Chemmoss


The trade routes that link the East-Coast of Africa to the Arabian Peninsula and to Europe represent a cross-fertilization of cultures and a metaphor for the multi-faceted singer and songwriter, Miriam Chemmoss. Miriam was raised in a potent brew of East-African, Middle-Eastern, and European cultures. She spent her formative years between Kenya, Tanzania, Europe and now the US where she came to college in the late 90's. Miriam received classical training in music, and performed at solo and choral competitions as a youth; helping her develop into the disciplined artist she is today. In 2004, Miriam moved to New York City where she would develop her performance skills more as a member of “the Marvalletes Revue” under the direction of original Marvallete, Pam Darden, in a revival of the famous Motown girl group. A year later, she joined the legendary “Soukous Stars” band; experts at Congolese Rumba (Zaiko) (And winners of the 2004 International Reggae and World Music Awards). She carved out a role among the male veterans as the sole female voice on both harmony and lead vocals. In late 2006, she recorded her first commercial single “RUDI”. A Swahili love anthem which literally means, “come back”, “RUDI” is an enchanting classic and has been on top of the charts and countdowns of several radio stations in urban markets all over the world: BBC Radio(UK), SARFM (New York), VOICE OF AMERICA (Washington, DC), Hot 96 FM, KISS FM, CAPITOL FM (KENYA), SANYU FM (Uganda), GHANA CHOICE FM, amongst others. Her vibrant presence and star quality is evident on the video of the international hit “RUDI”. The video has been in rotation on MTV Base, EATV as well as many local and international TV stations since early 2007. As a result of the buzz from her single release; Miriam has been featured in several publications in the US and overseas. She has been called "The Queen of African Urban Music"- (Vibe Magazine, Sept 2007) and has received great reviews for her work from many other publications. When asked where she gets her inspiration, Miriam mentions her own life experiences as well as African singers as her namesake Miriam Makeba, Sade, Tshala Mwana, Angelique Kidjo, Brenda Fassie amongst other influences. As a performer, Miriam brings an eccentric and sultry stage presence. Her music beautifully blends; Afro-funk, Reggae, R&B, Hip-Hop, Soul, Rumba and Zouk- giving her a wide musical audience. Her self-expression as well as her rich cultural background is a breath of fresh air, much needed in the evolving music industry of today. Miriam Chemmoss is currently hitting the road, sharing her music and supporting a range of causes she is passionate about; such as the plight of AIDS orphans in AFRICA, Quality EDUCATION, PEACE and HOPE for those affected by war and other disasters. When she is not performing she is in the studio completing her debut album.

Freddie Hubbard


Freddie Hubbard, (Indianápolis 1938) nació en el seno de una familia de músicos. Ese mismo año debutó como líder de session grabando para "Blue Note" un álbum de cinco estrellas titulado "Open Sesame" un disco que le permitió franquear la entrada al Olimpo de los grandes de la trompeta y solo con 21 años.
Ese maravilloso debut discográfico le permitió grabar en 1961 con el maestro del saxo tenor Dexter Gordon (Doin't Alright-Blue Note) con Oliver Nelson en otra obra maestra (The Blues and the Abstract Truth-Impulse!) con Quincy Jones (The Quintessence-Impulse) y con el saxo alto, Jackie McLean (Bluesnik-Blue Note) entre otros grandes músicos. Sustituyó a Lee Morgan en los "Jazz Messengers" de Art Blakey permaneciendo tres años en el grupo del maestro de la batería y en algunos círculos jazzisticos de New York, se le empezaba a llamar el "nuevo Miles Davis". En 1966 firma para el sello Atlantic donde dejó un magnifico disco titulado "Baclash" y en 1976 ficha por el sello del productor Cred Taylor "CTI" donde deja algunos títulos magníficos , entre ellos, "Red Clay" un disco que además de lanzar a la popularidad a Freddie Hubbard como a ningún otro músico de jazz, fue una grabación con la que muchos músicos de jazz han crecido influenciados.



Freddie Hubbard, el músico de Jazz ganador del Grammy cuyo estilo influyó en toda una generación de trompetistas y que colaboró con músicos legendarios de la talla de Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane y Sonny Rollins, falleció el lunes 29 de dicembre de 2008, a los 70 años.

Hubbard murió en el Hospital Sherman Oaks de Los Angeles, informó su representante, y también trompetista David Weiss, del New Jazz Composers Octet. Hubbard estaba hospitalizado desde que sufrió un infarto al corazón.

Jules Day


Jules Day is creating quite a buzz as she bursts onto the L.A. jazz scene with a voice and stage presence that belie her 22 years of age. Jules’s young jazz career has experienced a meteoric rise with regular appearances at Southern California’s top jazz venues including Hollywood’s Catalina Bar & Grill and Culver City’s The Jazz Bakery.
Jules recently found herself not only on the cover of the L.A. Jazz Scene monthly newspaper, but the subject of an in-depth article by publisher Myrna Daniels. Daniels, in the article, noted that she had seen several singers go on to find great success and predicted, “I think Jules Day will one day belong to that select circle of performers.”
Don Heckman, jazz critic for the Los Angeles Times, reviewed Jules’s Hollywood performance as “having the vibe, the enthusiasm, and the sheer irresistibility of a star in the making.” Heckman wrote, “At 21, Day has the blond and slender look of a youthful Diana Krall, but the resemblance stops there. Unlike Krall, whose vocals have always worked best when they flow from her piano playing, Day is a stand-up singer, intimately immersed in her songs, digging into their inner meaning with a constantly surprising sense of emotive maturity.”
Jules was honored to open the Temecula Smooth Jazz Festival with the enviable position as the only female vocalist on the roster.
When it comes to jazz, this Minneapolis native is the real deal with industry roots that include her grandfather, Kyle Peterson, founding the Twin Cities Jazz Society. "I grew up with jazz musicians popping in and out of the house," remembers Jules, "And the voices of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, June Christy -- to mention a few -- were a part of my early memories."
Immediately upon graduating from an arts magnate high school in St. Paul, Jules relocated to Los Angeles upon being invited to be a member of an internationally renowned music ensemble. Less than a year later, an offer to record her debut CD was too much to resist and Jules spent the remaining teenage year hard at work inside a recording studio.
As a complete package, Jules seems to have it all, but the ace up her sleeve is her extremely palatable and soulful voice with its flawless pitch, remarkable intonation, and subtle phrasing that can put the most inattentive crowd on the edge of their seats.

Al Di Meola


Al DiMeola (Jersey City, 22 de julio de 1954), guitarrista estadounidense del actual jazz. DiMeola es uno de los grandes representantes de la fusión jazzística, en su caso tanto con el rock como con las llamadas músicas del mundo, fruto de su interés por otras tradiciones musicales extrañas al ámbito occidental. Es un virtuoso tanto con la guitarra eléctrica como con la acústica.
Algunos datos bio-discográficos DiMeola estudió durante un breve periodo de tiempo en la Berklee School of Music en Boston a comienzos de los años setenta, antes de aceptar en 1974 reemplazar al guitarrista Bill Connors en el grupo de fusión Return to Forever (un grupo que incluía instrumentalistas como el tecladista Chick Corea y el bajista Stanley Clarke). Con su presencia, el grupo obtuvo un gran éxito comercial, con discos como Where Have I Known Before, de 1974; No Mystery, de 1975, y Romantic Warrior de 1976, que llevó a que DiMeola iniciase carrera en solitario.
Su carrera está jalonada brillantes ejemplos de discos de jazz fusión basados en la guitarra: 1976: Land of the Midnight Sun, 1977: Elegant Gypsy y Casino, 1979: Splendido Hotel. Neville Brothers


Neville Brothers saxophonist Charles Neville has always added an indefinable something to the family ensemble that no one else can provide: not just his intense spiritual vibe and stunning instrumental virtuosity, but even more a level of musical intelligence which both reflects and expands upon his experience as a skilled player in several musical idioms. Charles, the second oldest Neville brother, has the most diverse musical background. His experience on saxophone has included rhythm & blues, funk, jazz, be-bop, popular and even American Indian music. He cites as influences Louis Jordan, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and Professor Longhair. He is also the only brother that lived away from New Orleans for long periods of time, making places like New York, Memphis and Oregon his home. The Neville Brother most known for his pursuit of Eastern spiritual knowledge is also the family's keeper of the horn. His brothers affectionately refer to him as "The Horn Man". His saxophone solo won him a Grammy in 1989 for his haunting rendition of Healing Chant on the Yellow Moon CD.

Norma Winstone


Norma Winstone was born in London and first attracted attention in the late sixties when she shared the bill at Ronnie Scott's club with Roland Kirk. Although she began her career singing jazz standards, she became involved in the avant garde movement, exploring the use of the voice in an experimental way and evolving her own wordless approach to improvisation. She joined groups led by Mike Westbrook, Michael Garrick and sang with John Surman, Kenny Wheeler, Michael Gibbs and John Taylor, and worked extensively with many of the major European names and visiting Americans. In 1971 she was voted top singer in the Melody Maker Jazz Poll and subsequently recorded her own album Edge od Time for Decca, which although long deleted has now been re-released as a CD on the Disconforme label.



Norma Ann Winstone MBE (born 23 september 1941, in Bow East London) is a British jazz singer and lyricist. In a career spanning over forty years she is best known for her Wordless improvisations.
Winstone began singing in bands around Dagenham in the early 1960s, before joining Michael Garrick's band in 1968. Her first recording came the following year, with Joe Harriott. She recorded one album under her own name in 1972.
Winstone has worked with most of her peers in British jazz including Garrick, Mike Westbrook and her former husband, the pianist John aylor. With Taylor and trumpeter Kenny Wheeler she has performed and recorded three albums for ECM as a member of the trio Azimuth between 1977 and 1980. In addition she made an album with the American pianist Jimmy Rowles (Well Kept Secret, 1993).
Norma Winstone was awarded the MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours of 2007 for her services to Music.

“I’ve always been drawn to the space of silence between the notes. It’s in the silence that the secrets of songs reveal themselves.” – Kate McGarry Born into a large, musical family in Hyannis, Massachusetts, Kate began making music at an early age. She and her nine siblings would put on talent shows for their parents, playing and singing together at every opportunity. “We befriended the musicians,” says Kate. “We would go as a family to hear them and sing along. Hearing live music as a child was as important to me as anything in my life. I never considered doing any other work than singing. To my family, music was one of the healing arts. It was just as good as being a doctor.”Kate’s early musical inspiration came in the form of the Beatles, the Mills Brothers, Earth Wind & Fire, and the Celtic music she would hear at the local Irish pub. But then she heard Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett, and her life’s calling became obvious. “The chord and harmonic structures were mysterious and beautiful…It made so much sense to me.” A degree in African American music and studies with Archie Shepp soon followed.Success came quickly after graduation, with a move to the West Coast bringing gigs with Clark Terry and Hank Jones at the Monterey Jazz Festival and regular hits at such venerated venues as Catalina’s, the Jazz Bakery, and Le Café. In the vicinity of Hollywood, she also did some vocals for film and commercials, including tracks for Imax Films, the Sony Pictures release Caught and the title track for Boiling Point. But Kate’s spiritual nature and need to explore precipitated her next move back to the East Coast and a three year stint studying and teaching at an ashram in upstate New York.

Kate’s independently released 1992 debut recording, Easy To Love, an album of standards, earned her the attention of Music Magazine, who called her: “…a strong improviser who shows taste and restraint worthy of the most mature jazz singer.” But it was a move to New York City in 1999 that kick-started her singing and songwriting career. Her sophomore release Show Me (2001) was picked up by the lauded Palmetto label in 2003, earning her the distinction of being the first and only vocalist signed by the label. Her 2004 wedding to guitarist Keith Ganz inspired a change from an organ combo to a more roots-oriented, acoustic guitar-centric sound that perfectly combined Kate’s influences and inspirations. The resulting project Mercy Streets (Pametto, 2005) was hailed by All Music Guide as a release that “seamlessly combines music from many disparate sources into a cohesive, emotional experience (and) bridges the sonic chasm between folk-pop and jazz.”

Throughout 2005, there was mounting evidence of Kate McGarry’s expanding palette. In addition to releasing Mercy Streets, she toured with acclaimed pianist Fred Hersch and master vocalist Kurt Elling, performing Hersch’s song cycle, Leaves of Grass, a setting of Walt Whitman’s poetry to music. The project earned Hersch a Guggenheim Award, and the ensemble performed “Leaves of Grass” to a sold out audience at Carnegie Hall in March 2005. Kate can also be seen on Chick Corea’s 2005 DVD, Rendezvous, in an impromptu performance of “Smile” with Bobby McFerrin during Corea’s 60th birthday celebration at the Blue Note. Also in 2005, Kate performed over 50 concerts of The Different Moods of the Blues as a Lincoln Center Institute touring artist. 2006 brought fruitful collaborations with Grammy Award winning composer and bandleader Maria Schneider and New York’s Jazz Tap Ensemble and an appearance on Dee Dee Bridgewater’s NPR show, Jazz Set.With the release of 2007’s The Target, there was a sense that Kate had truly arrived. An NPR All Things Considered profile and New York Times review brought the magic of Kate McGarry to a whole new – and very receptive – audience. The record reached #1 on the national jazz charts." Gonzalo Rubalcaba

Gonzalo Rubalcaba (nacido el 27 de mayo de 1963 en La Habana, Cuba) es uno de los más importantes pianistas del jazz actual. Virtuoso instrumentista y prolífico compositor, fusiona la música cubana con influencias americanas en un poderoso e innovativo híbrido musical. En su música se siente permanentemente la impronta de la cubanía elevada a categoría de lenguaje universal.
Conocido por su gran habilidad en el piano desde los 1990s, sus más recientes trabajos han mostrado una madurez más abierta. Rubalcaba es, sin discusión, uno de los más importantes pianistas de jazz vivos en la actualidad. Aunque no estuvo motivado en razones políticas, emigró y vivió algunos años en la República Dominicana para más tarde fijar sus residencia definitiva en Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Estados Unidos de América.

Holly Cole

Holly Cole (born November 25, 1963 in Halifax, Nova Scotia) is a Canadian jazz singer, particularly popular in Canada and Japan for her versatile voice and her adventurous repertoire, which spans such divergent genres as show tunes, rock, and country music. In 1983, she travelled to Toronto to seek a musical career. In 1986, she founded a trio with bassist David Piltch and pianist Aaron Davis. Offered a record deal in 1989, the Holly Cole Trio released an EP, Christmas Blues, that year, which featured a striking version of The Pretenders' "2,000 Miles". This was followed by their first full album, Girl Talk, in 1990. A succession of releases through the early 90s fleshed out the trio's musical daring. For example, 1991's Blame It On My Youth, covers songs by Tom Waits ("Purple Avenue", aka "Empty Pockets"), Lyle Lovett ("God Will"), includes show tunes such as "If I Were a Bell" (from Guys and Dolls) and "On the Street Where You Live" (from My Fair Lady), and even remakes "Trust In Me", a silly song from Disney's The Jungle Book, into a sultry and sinister song of seduction. Also recorded in this period was a remarkable reinterpretation of Elvis Costello's "Alison". Following 1993's Don't Smoke In Bed, the trio took on its most audacious effort, a CD entirely of songs by Tom Waits, called Temptation. This 1995 release also dropped the "Trio" from the label. Cole next went into a two-album flirtation with pop music, perhaps keeping with the "diva" fad of the late 90s. These albums, Dark Dear Heart (1997) and Romantically Helpless (2000) veered further from jazz by introducing pop elements to Cole's sound. In 2001, she returned to the Christmas Jazz roots of her first CD with Baby It's Cold Outside, which included such should-be classics as "Christmas Time is Here" (from A Charlie Brown Christmas), "Santa Baby", and the title track. Swapping cold for hot, she moved to a Summer theme in 2003's Shade, this time reinterpreting Cole Porter ("Too Darn Hot"), Irving Berlin ("Heatwave"), and The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson ("God Only Knows"). Cole's latest album, Holly Cole (originally entitled This House Is Haunted) is scheduled for release in February 2007. Cole tours frequently, particularly around the holiday season, in Canada. She was also a part of the 1999 Lilith Fair tour.

CELIA MUR


Cantante de formación clásica, siempre estuvo animada por su padre, el compositor y guitarrista flamenco, Antonio Fernández de Moya. Fue alumna de la soprano lírica Maryan Bryfdir durante seis años en el Centro de Arte Lírico de Granada. Superó las pruebas de canto de 5º grado de la Associated Board of The Royal Schools of Music del Reino Unido. Entre 1989 y 1995 comenzó la primera etapa formativa y profesional en el universo del jazz de Celia Mur, dedicándose de forma exclusiva a ese lenguaje, a sus músicas afines y al estudio de la voz como instrumento.

Para perfeccionar sus estudios en el canto jazzistico, se inscribió como alumna en varios seminarios internacionales en Valencia,Sevilla y Castellón, teniendo como profesorado a músicos y cantantes importantes del mundo del jazz, entre ellos: Sheila Jordan, Perico Sambeat, Paolo Fresu, Javier Colina, Marc Miralta, Mark Turner o Jorge Pardo. Más adelante y como consecuencia de esa experiencia docente, fue profesora de canto en los seminarios del Palau de la Música de Valencia, en el de Motril y en el de la villa de la Zubia. Asimismo fue Jefa del departamento de canto en las escuelas Duetto de Valencia, durante 2001 y 2002 y en la Escuela de Jorge Lario "L' espai musical" y posteriormente en la escuela de música moderna y Jazz del contrabajista Mario Rossy, en Valencia.

Celia Mur es una de las cantantes de jazz mas interesantes de la generación actual en España. Su primer disco a su nombre, el magnifico "Footprints", dejó un grato recuerdo cuando los aficionados al jazz comprobaron la calidad de su canto improvisado a la manera habitual del scat. Su segundo disco "Las flores de mi vida" (Satchmo record 2003) es un recorrido intimista por aquellas canciones que a lo largo de su vida significaron algo para ella y cantadas en clave de jazz. Un disco que está guardado cariñosamente en mi colección firmado por el puño y letra de la cantante cuando Celia vino a Sevilla a actuar en el Teatro de San José de la Rinconada junto al magnifico pianista valenciano, Ricardo Belda.

Su actividad en los ultimos años es incesante y ha cantado con importantes músicos españoles y extranjeros. Cabe destacar su actuación en el marco del Festival de Jazz de Granada de 2004, cuando formando parte de la bigband granadina, actuó junto al saxofonista alto, Benny Golson, en una noche de jazz inolvidable. Sus actuaciones a lo largo ya ancho de la geografía española son muy frecuentes en clubes (Jamboree de Barcelona o Calle 54 de Madrid o Secadero de Granada); Festivales de Jazz (Almuñecar Calpe, Terrassa y Granada) y en otros tipos de eventos. Celia Mur, pues, tiene por delante un enorme futuro y con un poco de suerte será una cantante importante de jazz en este tercer milenio.

Born in the southern state of Johor, and grew up in Kuala Lumpur, Atilia feels complete support from her family. That boost up her confidence in creating some of the finest melodies in Malaysia. The evident is revealed in her debut album, “Sangkar” that has launched in March 2007 and marketed domestically in June 2007 in Malaysia.

George Benson


George Benson (Pittsburgh, 22 de marzo de 1943) es un guitarrista estadounidense de jazz; ha hecho también algunas exitosas aportaciones al jazz vocal (su voz es grave y su canto similar en su manierismo al de artistas como Stevie Wondwr y Donny Hathaway). Se trata de uno de los artistas de jazz más populares de las últimas décadas, habiendo recibido además encendidos elogios por parte de la crítica.
Niño virtuoso de la guitarra, grabó su primer single "It should have been me" a la edad de los 10 años. Su música ha abarcado tanto el swing y el bop como el hard bop, el quiet storm y la fusión del jazz con el pop y el soul; en Benson se pueden reconocer las influencias de Charlie Christian y Wes Montgomery. Es un guitarrista con un gran dominio de la velocidad de ejecución y del swing.
Benson comenzó su carrera artística como cantante, actuando en nightclubs a los ocho años y grabando cuatro caras para el sello X de RCA en 1954; formó también una banda de rock a los 17 en la que ya tocaba la guitarra. Su audición de las grabaciones de Christian, Montgomery y Charlie Parker le llevaron a interesarse en el jazz y, hacia 1962, empezó a tocar en la banda de Brother Jack McDuff. Tras formar su grupo en 1965, Benson grabó dos discos de soul jazz y hard bop para Columbia y colaboró en otros discos con artistas como Miles Davis, en Miles in the Sky. Firmó con Verve en 1967 y, tras la muerte de Montgomery, el productor Creed Taylor le hizo grabar con grandes conjuntos en A&M (1968-1969) y CTI (1971-1976).
Estos discos le convirtieron en una estella dentro del mundo del jazz, popularmente empezó a adquirir resonancia tras prodigarse más en lo vocal tras firmar con Warner Bros. en 1976. Su primer disco para esta compañía, Breezin', se convirtió en un éxito gracias a su solo vocal en la canción "This Masquerade" lo que le llevó a frecuentar la fusión con el pop, cuya culminación fue el disco producido por Quincy Jones, Give Me the Night (1980). Durante los ochenta frecuentó material comercial dejando su guitarra únicamente como acompañamiento. A finales de los ochenta, volvió a terrenos jazzísticos grabando un disco de estándares, Tenderly, y otro con la banda de Basie, en los que su guitarra volvió a tener protagonismo. Su oscilación entre el jazz y el pop ha sido frecuente desde entonces....

Al Jarreau

Jarreau (Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 1940) lleva muchos años en el mundo de la música y está en posesión de varios Grammys, como el que obtuvo en 1977 al mejor cantante de jazz, en 1982 al de pop y en 1993, al de rhythm and blues. La ilusión de su vida es la de pertenecer a una big band, hacer duetos con bajistas o pianistas y trabajar con una orquesta sinfónica en un disco cuyo tema central es la leyenda sobre un dios indio, y todo lo ha conseguido. La única opinión negativa que ha salido de su boca, respecto a lo que música se refiere, es hacia el rap. Llego a declarar que era una desgracia para la música negra, ya que su único baremo es el éxito. "El rap no es mi terreno. Puedo tomar prestadas cosas de su música pero discrepo con el tipo de mensajes que lanza. Si lo llegara a hacer sería con mucho cuidado. Y es que no me importaría tener un gran éxito comercial, de hecho lo quiero tener, pero no haría ciertas cosas para conseguirlo". Su trece primeros álbumes, hasta "Tenderness" incluido, se realizaron bajo la misma discográfica, con la que llevaba trabajando más de veinte años. Veinte años "muy positivos" hasta que "llegó el momento de seguir mi propio camino. Al final he encontrado una nueva familia, formada por algunos directivos de la antigua compañía, por lo que es como volver al seno de la vieja familia". Reconoce haber hecho todos los estilos que había soñado, y sobre sus influencias a la hora de empezar a cantar nombra desde a Bob Dylan o los Beatles, como a Jon Hendricks, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgeral, Joni Mitchell, clásicos como Bach o el cantautor francés Leo Ferré.
