"Jazz and Medicine: The Incredible Legacy of Herb Silverstein"

"In the 1980s, a son of Herb introduced him to a recording by Chick Corea, marking the beginning of a passionate love affair with jazz music. Herb started learning jazz piano and playing music with friends and colleagues. In 1985, he began composing songs; his analytical mind grasped the chord changes and patterns necessary to create music, but his creative heart and soul elevated that knowledge into crafting remarkable, beautiful, and memorable memories.

He has produced 17 albums, including his latest release, 'Aspenrose: Live at the Opera House.' He has also co-authored three editions of 'Jazz Harmony and Improvisation' with Richard Drexler, containing 60 of Herb's original compositions. For over 35 years, Dr. Silverstein has been composing jazz albums to inspire and support the Ear Research Foundation. Herb records and performs his music for all to enjoy and to raise awareness about the importance of healthy hearing. His generous support has enabled the Ear Research Foundation to provide direct care to thousands of underserved individuals.

Born in Philadelphia, Herbert Silverstein, MD, FACS, earned his bachelor's degree with honors from Dickinson College and his master's in physiology and medical degree from the Temple University School of Medicine. Prior to arriving in Sarasota in 1973, Herb served on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary, as director of the Walker Biochemistry Research Laboratory, and as associate professor and director of the Otolaryngologic Research Laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Dr. Silverstein is internationally recognized as a leading authority on Meniere's disease, having received the prestigious Prosper Meniere Society Gold Medal Honorary Award in 1996 for his contributions to understanding the biochemistry of Meniere's disease and his surgical developments to treat it. He was one of the first physicians in the United States to use a laser in ear surgery to restore hearing in otosclerosis patients. He was an early researcher in cochlear implantation to bring sound to people with profound deafness. He developed a new procedure for otosclerosis called Laser STAMP (Laser Stapedotomy Minus Prosthesis), which does not require a prosthesis to restore patients' hearing, and many minimally invasive surgical techniques, including the Silverstein MicroWick for treating Meniere's disease, tinnitus, and sudden deafness with extended intratympanic medication. He also developed a new procedure to alleviate hyperacusis/noise intolerance symptoms.

Herbert Silverstein, MD, FACS, President and Founder of the Florida Ear & Sinus Center and the Ear Research Foundation, has consistently been recognized since 1979 as one of the 'Best Doctors in America.' He has been a leader in otology (the science of the ear) for over 35 years, developing surgical and diagnostic procedures, inventing instruments (like the facial nerve monitor/stimulator), teaching medical students, residents, and fellows, and assisting people from all walks of life.

Dr. Silverstein serves as a Clinical Professor of Surgery on the teaching faculty of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the University of South Florida. He is board-certified in Otolaryngology and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also an active member of many medical societies, including the prestigious American Academy of Otolaryngology, the American Neurotology Society, and the Triological Society. He also serves as an advisory staff member at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

In 1979, Dr. Silverstein founded the Ear Research Foundation. Today, he serves as its President and Medical Director. As an active researcher, Dr. Silverstein speaks at numerous annual international medical meetings and is the author of over 250 scientific papers, six textbooks, and videos.

Among his many honors and recognitions are the 2nd Howard P. House Award for Excellence in Ear Surgery and the 10th Prosper Meniere Society Gold Medal Honorary Award.
