This is not, however, the first time Melanie Scholtz reaches a large audience. She has performed with Cape Town Philharmonic orchestra and sang the South African anthem in front of millions of TV viewers at The Presidents Cup in George.

Emi Tawata (多和田えみ Tawata Emi?), born on June 26, 1984 in Okinawa, is a Japanese singer. Her music is a mix of several styles like Soul, R&B, Jazz, Blues and Funk.

05年、高校卒業後カナダでの語学留学中にストリートジャズバンドに参加し、音楽に目覚める。
帰国後の06年、沖縄ナンクル・ミュージックスクールで本格的な活動を開始、県内で積極的にライヴ展開。
07年4月、MSNミュージック主催の全国オーディションにて審査員特別賞[NYLON賞]を受賞。
翌5月16日に沖縄限定で発売したシングル“ネガイノソラ”が見事インディーチャートNo.1に輝き、
8月、AMUSE傘下のプロダクション・レーベル[AZEAL]の第1弾アーチストとして専属契約を締結。
10月、A.C.ジョビンのトリビュートCD『ジョビニアーナ~愛と微笑みと花~』に、新人として唯一参加。

Cantante japonesa de bossa nova. Nació en Sao Paulo (Brasil) en 1962, pero a los 10 años de edad se trasladó con
su familia a Tokio, donde su padre abrió un restaurante de comida brasileña, el Saci Perere.

A partir de entonces pasó la mitad de cada año en Japón y la otra mitad en Brasil.

En 1989 publicó su primer álbum, Catupirý, y pronto se hizo popular en Japón, apareciendo en varios anuncios televisivos.

En 2003 publicó un álbum titulado Dans Mon Île (‘En mi isla’ en francés), un compendio de canciones francesas famosas para el que se inspiró en un viaje a aquel país.

Born in Tokyo (Japan) Kuriko Tsugawa started playing bass at the age of fifteen. Soon after she joined what would become her first jazz ensemble experience, the Tomisato High School big band, affectionately known as “The Mad Hatters”. As a member of “The Mad Hatters”, she had the opportunity to perform at major festivals throughout Japan. Recognition was waiting around the corner, and it was in 1999 that she and her bandmates won the first prize from the Student Jazz Festival that is held every year by Japan Association For Jazz Education. For three consecutive years Kuriko’s “Mad Hatters” shared bill with visiting artist Monterey High School Big Band in an annual festival held in Tomisato, Japan. This enriching annual encounters were the spark that ignited Kuriko..s passionate decision to pursue jazz music in the United States as a career. Upon graduation from Tomisato High School she studied privately with Kazuteru Harada and Osamu Koichi for a year, preparing to pursue her dream of studying jazz in the US. In 2001, she auditioned for Berklee College of Music and won a scholarship to attend the college starting in 2002. She was now one step closer to her dream. Since her arrival in Boston she had the opportunity to study with renowned jazz educators like Hal Crook, Dave Santoro, John Lockwood, Ron Mahdi and the late Herb Pomeroy, and she played with jazz legends like Joe Lovano, George Garzone, Delfeayo Marsalis, Randy Brecker, Yellow Jackets founder Russ Ferrante, Makoto Ozone and Danilo Perez. Besides her many inspiring mentors Kuriko found in Boston a vibrant generation of like-minded young musicians who have been as crucial for her development as any of her professors. Her time in Boston paid off, and her quick improvements lead to a really busy performing schedule. Besides such Boston musts as Wally’s Jazz Café and Ryles Jazz Club Kuriko performed in a variety of festivals around the New England area and in 2006 was selected as a member of a quartet representing Berklee in Lucca Jazz Donna Festival in Italy. 2006 was also the year that marked the end of Kuriko’s Bostonian era and saw the beginning of a new one, that which came with the inevitable move to New York City. Within weeks of arriving in New York she was fortunate enough to land a steady gig in The Algonquin Hotel in Times Square. Since then she has gotten increasingly active in the fervent New York jazz scene and she keeps evolving day by day with the confidence and passion which comes from making one’s dreams come true…

* Jaime Roos es uno de los mas destacados artistas de la música popular uruguaya, con innumerables éxitos discográficos.

Nació en la ciudad de Montevideo, Uruguay, en el año 1953. Su infancia transcurre en el barrio Sur, en una casa de la calle Convención, a metros de Durazno, esquina inmortalizada en una de sus mejores canciones (Durazno y Convención).
Los tambores del candombe que recorren su barrio, todo lo que transmite la radio, la música de los tablados del carnaval, más los Beatles y el rock, han sido algunas de las influencias que asimiló para luego plasmar una música de innegable personalidad y sello propio que le ha valido el tremendo éxito con el que cuenta en su país, y que se está extendiendo sin pausa en la Argentina y el mundo.
Su música es una original combinación de cuatro elementos básicos: rock, candombe, murga y milonga, fusionados con una naturalidad y consistencia verdaderamente sorprendentes. Fuera de estos ingredientes principales podemos encontrar, además, toques de tango, jazz, vals, bolero, música centroamericana, huayno, etc.

Habitualmente, en sus actuaciones, es acopañado por el grupo de música "Contraseña", que está integrado por destacados músicos.

  • 2007 - El 14 de Junio es declarado "Ciudadano Ilustre" de la ciudad de Montevideo, en reconocimiento a su trayectoria, en dicho acto menciona "Montevideo es mi lugar en el mundo, esta ciudad es mi hogar".
  • 2008 - Recibe el premio Gardel como Mejor Album Artista Canción testimonial por su trabajo "Fuera de Ambiente".

En el 2009 lanza el albúm "Hermano te estoy hablando" cuyos temas son extraidos de el concierto de julio del 2008 en el teatro Solis.

When you listen to the music of Elizabeth Mis, you’re hearing the manifestation of a brighter tomorrow. The very sound of the young soprano saxophonist’s horn and compositions reveal a style and grace beyond her years. It is the sound of an open heart – a spirit at peace and on a trajectory to spread love to all within earshot of her horn. Her debut album is titled Forever & Ever because that is whole-heartedly how long she wants to soothe listeners with her divinely inspired melodies. Shepherded into the spotlight by prolific pop instrumental producer/guitarist Paul Brown, Elizabeth has crafted a tranquil yet groovin’ debut with broad appeal for all. Elizabeth Mis (pronounced “miss”) was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. She has been a musician since elementary school. Her first instrument was clarinet. “I started in third grade because I wanted to be part of the band,” she shares. “I took lessons but I never really liked the sound of the instrument. Then when I was 12, I heard Kenny G. Even though he was playing a soprano sax, his sound wasn’t like a saxophone and definitely not like my clarinet. It was something in between and that sound changed my life.” Amazingly, the first time Elizabeth placed a soprano saxophone to her lips, she was able to elicit a beautiful sound from the instrument. “My tone pretty much came to me. I had no idea it was unusual or special. It was just what I did - a God given gift that I could blow it like I did the very first time I picked it up.” Still, when Elizabeth is passionate about something, she puts her all into it. Before she even got her first soprano sax, Elizabeth bought books and studied the fingering so that by the time she did own one, she already knew what she was supposed to do. An advantage that Elizabeth had over other aspiring musicians her age was that she was home schooled from the fourth grade on. This gave her extra time not only to practice her music but also perform around her community - from churches to mall openings. “My school day wasn't as long as kids’ in regular school,” she explains. “I got my work done early which gave me the rest of the day. Sometimes I did two performances in one day. My very first gig was at a warehouse that sold music accessories. I was a regular customer and they liked me, so they asked me to play for their holiday party.” Having discovered a way to mix the horn out of her favorite Dave Koz and Kenny G CDs, Elizabeth would play their parts herself.” As she continued exploring, Elizabeth found that she appreciates a wide variety of music. “I don't listen to a lot of pop radio,” she confesses, “but I keep up with everything out there that young people listen to. I like Rihanna mostly for the beats in her music. Incorporating that style into what I do instrumentally will be kind of cool. I also appreciate John Legend for bringing back the old school sound and making it new. I have classic R&B faves like Sade and Stevie Wonder, and I like a little rock which I’ve played in jam sessions. I've also played some straight ahead jazz in certain situations, too, but I guess my forte is what’s been given the name ‘smooth jazz,’ a term I don’t really care for. To me, smooth jazz is Instrumental R&B-Pop.” When it comes to “Instrumental R&B-Pop,” Elizabeth could not have picked a better expert to be the dream producer of her debut album than Paul Brown. Also a guitarist and composer, he has literally worked with every major artist in the genre and taken their music straight to the top of the charts. “I do a lot of research into anything I’m passionate about so I knew he was the man,” she states. “The only problem was in all my extensive research I could not find a way to contact him directly. Then, out of the blue, I heard on the radio that he was coming to play a small venue downtown - his first time playing Cleveland. I couldn't believe it! I wanted to meet him and play with him as part of his show, so my mom and I went to the venue early. We got there just after his sound check and I just asked him. He said, ‘Sure you can play with me’ – and he hadn’t even heard me play a note! My Mom ran home to get my horns before he could think twice. Anyway, I played with him and after the show he agreed right there to produce me!” This boldness in Ms. Mis is not uncommon. She exudes professionalism, confidence and class. When it comes to creating her music, Elizabeth is a night bird - very nocturnal. Many times, her horn doesn’t even make it out of the case until ..round about 11P.M. “That's when the inspiration comes,” she says – “just the way I am.” Night time is when the seeds for songs like the serene “When the Time is Right” were sown right there in her Cleveland bedroom before she brought them to Brown for consultation. “It was a challenge at first,” she says of the collaboration process. “We started out working over the phone and email. We discussed direction then I worked out what I'd do with a particular song on my horn. By the time I flew to L.A. to complete the sessions, it was much easier for me to write and come up with horn parts. What helped most was being in the studio with Paul…creating the music in the moment. It was a dream come true.” Along with Paul, Elizabeth also worked with pros like Jeff Caruthers and Gerald McCauley. Out poured songs like the feel good and funky “And That’s O.K.,” the laidback “Feelin’ Fine,” the romantic friends in love opus “I Can’t Believe” (featuring vocals by Herbert Woods), and the moody cool of “With the Top Down” (on which Elizabeth’s soprano sax meets the alto sax of Anthony Long). A more tender spirituality informs the John Stoddart composition “In My Corner” (with beautiful acoustic guitar work by Paul), which is followed by the sunny sassy friendship pledge “If You Need a Friend” (featuring lead singer Jeanette Martin). Also special is “Akwaba,” a melody that originally had the working title “African Happy.” Elizabeth co-wrote this song with Paul Brown and Roberto Vally whose daughter lives in South Africa. To tie in the culture, they titled it “Akwaba,” the word for “hello” in regions of South Africa. Finally, the CD’s closer is a cover of “I Swear,” a big pop hit by vocal quartet All-4-One in 1994. Surprisingly, Elizabeth was not familiar with the epic love ballad. “When Paul brought it to me I was so moved,” she remembers. “It worked beautifully on the soprano sax.” Elizabeth is thankful for the opportunities to pursue her dream, but also takes time to give back to others through work with charitable organizations such as African Aid (to which she plans to donate her publishing proceeds from “Akwaba”), Invisible Children and many others. One she has worked with for a while now is Wigs for Kids. “At 14, I started doing things to raise money for the organization which is based here in Cleveland. People from all over the country cut off their ponytails and donate the hair to kids with cancer so they can look like themselves again.” She has also been putting her creativity and computer savvy to other extracurricular challenges such as creating a marketing campaign for her favorite perfume, Angel. “The first time I saw it in a store,” she begins, “I was intrigued by the variety of beautiful bottles it came in - hand-cut crystal star bottles. Then I experienced the perfume! I came to know everyone from the store level on up to the company's New York execs. For 15 years, they did no advertising - just word of mouth from women who wore it - and were outselling Chanel. I wanted to do something for Angel, so I sent them a handmade portfolio with some other ideas on how I thought they could promote Angel. The musical component was a short video I produced using photos I received from sales reps at the store. I wrote the music for the 2-minute piece…the first time I composed something completely different from what my music sounds like.” However, Elizabeth’s main focus is getting the rest of the world familiar with the sound of her horn. Her most memorable performance to date was in September ..08 when she played the Detroit Jazz Festival, sitting in with Paul Brown on a couple of tunes. “I felt like a true smooth jazz artist playing for Paul’s crowd. They treated me like a star, interviewing me afterward and everything. I thought, ‘Wow, I could do this every night!’” With all of her heart and hard work, Elizabeth will be blowing all of her aspirations into sweet top-selling reality. “My biggest career goal is to bridge the gap and get the young people of my generation more interested in instrumental music,” she says. Tapping back into the theme of her debut album, she thoughtfully concludes, “What Forever & Ever means to me is that from the very first day I picked up the soprano sax, I started dreaming...not just little ones but big ones, with each goal bringing me closer to the next one. I hope that through my music I can encourage others to follow their dreams...something I intend to be doing forever and ever.”

Sara Tavares was only 16 years old when she won two of Portugals most prestigious TV music contests. Born out second generation Cape Verdian immigrants, Sara grew up between two cultures. Initially known as a singer and composer of Gospel, Funk and Soul, she gradually incorporated more African music in her compositions. Her second album Mi Ma B, produced by Parisian Lokua Kanza, reached gold in Portugal and was a mix of African rhythms and melodic pop songs. After a long wait of five years, finally her new album Balance was released in February 2006. On this record, produced by Sara herself, she wrote and composed all the songs and played many of the instruments. Balance is a beautiful record on which Sara shows to be a very talented contemporary singer/song writer, who has managed to combine in a subtle and honest way contemporary music with her African roots.

Francisco Molina y Los Tres

...también conocido como Pancho Molina, es un músico chileno, ejecutante de batería y percusión. Se hizo famoso por su participación como baterista del exitoso grupo chileno Los Tres, aunque la mayor parte de su carrera la ha desarrollado como músico de jazz.

Francisco Molina participó como baterista de Los Tres desde los inicios de la banda, en la década de los
80 en Concepción, hasta el final de la primera etapa en 2000. Entretanto había abandonado por un tiempo el grupo para llevar a cabo estudios de jazz en Estados Unidos. Su estilo dentro de la banda demostró ciertas influencias jazzísticas, aunque se adaptó de buena forma a las composiciones pop de Álvaro Henríquez y sus demás compañeros. Disfrutó de los momentos de mayor fama del grupo penquista.

Conformó en 1991 el grupo Ángel Parra Trío, junto con sus compañeros de grupo Ángel Parra y Roberto Lindl, con los que grabó en 1992 el primer disco homónimo de la banda. Molina no formó parte del retorno de Los Tres en 2006.

En 1995 formó su proyecto personal, Pancho Molina y Los Titulares, con el que ha publicado tres discos: Los Titulares (1998), Perseguidor (2001) y Bipolar (2003). Han cultivado estilos semejantes al swing, el bop y la improvisación, y hoy Francisco Molina se ha convertido en uno de los principales referentes del jazz chileno. Dentro de sus últimos proyectos destaca la musicalización en clave jazz de canciones del trovador chileno Víctor Jara,

Actualmente reside en la ciudad norteamericana de Boston, dedicado a sus estudios en Berklee College of Music, participa ahora en la Banda Tributo a Chile, que integra junto a la cantante mexicana Mili Bermejo, el bajista Dan Greenspan, el pianista Nando Michelin y el saxo de Patricia Zárate. De sus presentaciones en Boston, han sido invitados a participar en el Panamá Jazz Festival creado por el connotado pianista Danilo Pérez.

José Fernandez Torres (Tomatito)

Tomatito es el nombre artístico de José Fernández Torres, guitarrista flamenco nacido en Almería en 1958, en el barrio de Pescadería.

Hijo de José Fernández Castro “el Tomate” y nieto de Miguel Fernández Cortés "el Tomate", un habitual en las fiestas flamencas de principios de siglo. Debutó con sólo 10 años como guitarrista de acompañamiento en la Peña el Taranto de Almería, presentado por José Sorroche.

Tomatito ha producido discos como solista y fue acompañante a la guitarra de Paco de Lucía. Tocó con Camerón de la Isla (a ambos los conoció ya en Málaga) durante los 18 últimos años de vida de éste.

Junto con Camarón, tocó una guitarra Esteso Conde hermanos.

A lo largo de su trayectoria, ha compartido escenario con los más grandes: Frank Sinatra, Elton John, Neneh Cherry, John McLaughlin, Irakere, Chick Corea... Ha grabado con el pianista Michel Camilo, y los guitarristas Elliot Fisk, Joan Babiloni y Larry Coryell. Ha colaborado con artistas tan dispares como Mecano y Carlos Cano.

Participa con gran éxito de crítica y público en diversos festivales internacionales: los de Montreux, Nueva York y Basilea, el Festival Internacional de Música de Estambul (Turquía), el Festival Internacional de Guitarra de Lyon (Francia), el Julián Arcas de Almería (España), etc. Ha realizado varias giras por Japón, Suiza, Francia y Alemania.

Entre sus flamencos más admirados están Enrique Morente, José Mercé, Potito, El Cigala, Duquende, Carmen Linares o Remedios Amaya. Internacionalmente, confiesa haber bebido del jazz de Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny, George Benson, Django Reinhardt, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker y Mingus y del blues y rock latino de Santana, Pablo y Luis Salinas, B.B. King, Chuck Berry y Eric Clapton.

Born in Panama in 1955, Santi moved to New York at age four. His father, an Afro-Cuban pianist-composer, sparked Santi's early interest in music. By 9, he was studying classical bass in a New York City school for gifted children. In junior high school he switched to guitar, playing regularly with a jazz-rock group. At age 14 he heard his first live jazz, a Billy Taylor Trio school show. Santi was an instant convert: jazz was the music he wanted to play. At Union College he led the school's jazz workshop, playing both guitar and bass, and taking his first composition lessons. A year at the New England Conservatory brought Santi back to full time bass playing. An offer to tour with Archie Shepp cut short his studies; he played with Archie for the next four years. In 1981 Santi moved to Paris where he played with Sam Rivers and led his own groups. Most notable was one with Chico Freeman, Billy Hart and Kenny Werner. That group was also the first major group to feature his originals—the begining of an ever-deepening commitment to composing. Returning to the New York scene in 1985, Santi was soon playing and recording regularly with giants like Don Pullen, Pharoah Sanders, Louis Hayes and Arthur Blythe. Within a couple of years he was again leading his own groups, including an innovative double bass quintet and Euforia, a Brazilian-flavored trio playing his and Paul Meyer's compositions. Playing and touring actively in the early ’90s, Santi also started graduate studies at Wesleyan in ethnomusicology and world music. Out of these interests grew his current band, Circlechant, combining influences and musicians from Brazil, Israel, Belize, Cuba and Panama. At the same time, his academic career is flourishing: he is currently Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies at UMass. Santi continues to compose prolifically and to play with greats of jazz like Hank Jones, Larry Coryell, Randy Weston, Freddie Hubbard and Cecil Taylor. Since his first record date in 1987, Santi has appeared on over 100 recordings, including eight as leader. His previous Mapleshade CDs are Jazznost with Walter Davis Jr., The Offering with David Murray and Euforia.
